Heatstroke can occur if a person’s body temperature rises to 40 degrees Celsius or 104 Fahrenheit. This can happen when a person’s body is overheating because of several possible reasons. It can be because of prolonged exposure to strenuous physical activity or exercise in high-temperature environments. Heatstroke is very common during summertime or in places that experience hotter climates. But let’s go back to heatstroke. What are its symptoms, and how can you identify that you are already on the brink of heatstroke?  

  • Headache – one of the common symptoms of heatstroke is a throbbing head. Although this can also be caused by other illnesses or sicknesses.  
  • High body temperature – when your core body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, then you are more likely to experience a heatstroke. A core body temperature can be obtained through a rectal thermometer.  
  • Alteration in sweating – when you are experiencing skin that is dry and hot to the touch, you might experience heatstroke caused by hot weather. If you have hot and moist skin to the touch, you are probably experiencing a heatstroke that is caused by strenuous exercise.  
  • Rapid breathing – rapid and shallow breathing is also a sign of stroke  
  • Altered mental state or behavior – slurred speech, agitation, confusion, delirium, and coma can also be a result of heatstroke.  
  • Racing heart rate – an increased pulse is also a sign of heatstroke. 
  • Nausea and vomiting – feeling sick to your stomach and vomiting. 
  • Flushed skin – as your body temperature increases, your skin may turn red.  

When Should You See a Doctor? 

When a person is showing the symptoms that we mentioned above, it is critically important that you seek medical help and call 911. While waiting for the help to come, do the following: 

Make sure that the person is not exposed to heat or a hot environment. Put the person into the shade or any cooler environment.  

Remove all the excess clothing as possible to cool off the body. 

Cool the person with whatever means you can find. There are many things you can do like putting him/her into a tub of water, spray with a garden hose, turning on the AC unit, place some ice packs on the head, neck, and other parts of the body — all the means possible.
